we are a multi-disciplinary laboratory for curiosity-driven discovery and research. The laboratory is based on high-level post-graduate education, and attracts talented students and researchers from all parts of the world. Intellectual development and playful creativity is at centre stage. The laboratory was founded in 2000 by Prof. Owe Orwar, who was its head until 2010.

The research performed in our group uses and develops methods in chemistry, nano-technology, soft condensed matter physics, biotechnology, and cell biology.

We wish to understand complex chemical and physical phenomena in biological systems at previously unattainable levels of detail. In particular, we study how shape-, size- and dimension-dynamics can be used to control chemistry in small-scale biological systems. Other prioritized areas include transport in soft-matter nanochannels, network dynamics, and studies of membrane protein structure and function, in particular, ion channels. We also create new ultra-small-scale technologies by combining biological, and biomimetic materials with solid-state technology. Such devices include biosensors, biological, and chemical computers, microrobots, and chemical analysis systems. Finally, we develop new transfection tools for drug-, and gene-delivery.
